Modern Quilt

I have started my Modern Quilt for the
About 40 members from the NYC Metro Mod Quilt Group
are participating in the traveling show.

Our quilts will be based on answering this question,
"What does modern quilting mean to you?"

I have been pondering that question for a few weeks now.
I'm still not ready to put pen to paper on that one,
so I put needle and thread to fabric instead.

Because this quilt needs to be a specific size, (15x20),
I cut out a big piece of paper that size to make a layout.
I'm doing a kind of spin on a Mondrian layout.
When I was studying advertising design at F.I.T. a million years ago,
I remember doing and ad layout in a similar way,
with great results.
So why not give fabric the same shot?!
This is a lot more planning than I am used to, but
I am trying to make the individual blocks themselves
be more of an intuition piecing process.
I haven't picked out what my interior borders will be yet,
thought I would get all the blocks done first and then
audition some borders.

This quilt must be done and in the mail by September 1st.
It's creeping up fast!!

****************

on another note . . .
The Kid's birthday is tomorrow.

I think we make tie die shirts almost every year at this time.
Hehe. You never get too old for tie die shirts!
She even threw in a pair of scrub pants too.
Is it sunny where you are today?
Hope you are staying cool and having fun!

The Kid is Alright . . .

Two nights ago I got the phone call no mother wants to hear,

"Mom, (sobs), we were in a car accident"

Heart stops.
Then beats too fast. Must focus and pull it together.

The kid is okay. Broken collar bone.
I'll take a broken collar bone.
It could have been a hundred times worse.

So here we are three days before the kid is the Maid of Honor
in her friend's wedding . . .

The sling the hospital gave us will never work!
We need something sassy and clever.
Thanks goodness we had just the stuff to put
these lovelies together.

I hope this doesn't gross you out, but I took a picture of the xray.
I knew the kid would want to see it to confirm she really had
a broken collar bone. Don't ask.

This most adorable flower arrangement arrived
from the kid's work buddies.
And it looks just like Mocha!!
So here I am making ice bags, fetching advil,
plumping pillows, brushing hair . . .
And thanking God every minute that
my darling daughter is still right here next to me.

Sunday Round Up

Did you miss me?
I have been quiet these past two weeks.

Figuring things out sometimes needs lots of silence and reflection.
Contemplation. We all need a space to be by ourselves.

I have been working on lots of stuff though . . .
The sweat shop has been very active these last two weeks,
only I couldn't really show you anything,
and here's why.
I have been working on a little birthday present for my friend Anne.
I think she reads this blog sometimes, so it's been top secret.
I'm giving this to her today, so I think we are safe.

I used Tonya's book Word Play to figure out how to make the letters.
Previously I have only made my name,
but this was tons of fun!
I can see that I will be making many more word quilts in the future.
Anne and I are seekers, so this was a wonderful project to make for her.
It is amazing how everything fell into place so perfectly.
I never really measure too much, just jump in
and cut and make it work.

Boy did it work!
Everything I grabbed worked, fit and looked great.
The three words set up together with no finagling.
Even my FMQ is pretty good.
(If I do say so myself!)
And of course a polka dot binding to make it perfect.
I love it when I project comes together so effortlessly.
And I love it when a project is a difficult and I figure it out.
Passion is passion, now matter the degree of the struggle.

So happy birthday Anne! I hope you like it.

I also got my July Blocks of the Month done.
They were quite fun.
These are part of the 15 min play BOM series.
Here is my Hybrid Tea Rose.
This one, the Churn Dash was a two for one special!
You gotta love that!
What have you been up to?
Any secrets you are keeping? hehehe.

A little of this and a little of that . . .

Another lazy rainy Sunday . . .
All the better to flit around the house and work on
this and that.

I am making good progress on my fabric crochet basket.
Not sure what I'll put in it, but it is certainly
wonderful to look at!
I finally finished sewing on the binding to my zig zag quilt,
another good rainy day project.
Here is the back.
I just love the polka dot binding on this one.
This lovely Kaffe delight is all for me!
And I did the BOM over at 15 minutes play.
My corners don't match very well, but I'm perfectly fine with that!

Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!
